About

Guided by his interest of the built environment around him at a young age while growing up in Houston, Texas, Donovan attended architecture school in San Antonio for his undergraduate studies. While in San Antonio, he became involved in serving as a teaching assistant in beginning design summer programs for high school students. Donovan developed a passion for sharing his interest of architecture with young design students. In addition to his time in architecture school, he joined the American Institute of Architects (AIA), serving on various committees as a student in both AIA San Antonio and Texas Society of Architects.

Donovan graduated from the M.Arch program at the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture. As a graduate student, Donovan’s design studio work was showcased in an AIA National Emerging Professionals Exhibit. Outside of his course work during his graduate studies, he was a Graduate Student Senator, served on various Division of Architecture Committees as a Graduate Student Representative, and was a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Instructor of Record for first-year design studio. Donovan was selected as the 2021-2022 OU Provost’s Graduate Assistant Award for Humanities and Fine Arts.

While teaching, Donovan developed an interest in beginning design pedagogy with a particular focus on how the act of making in an early design education informs design thinking for students engaging in a direct experience with materiality.

Donovan is involved with the AIA at both a local and national level. He served on the AIA Central Oklahoma Chapter Board of Directors for over five years as the chapter’s Associates Director. Donovan was awarded the AIA Central Oklahoma Chapter’s Robert M. Lawarence Volunteer Award in 2024 for his service in the chapter. He currently serves on the AIA National Associates Committee as the State Associates Representative for Oklahoma.

Outside of academia, Donovan previously worked in professional practice on design teams for numerous project typologies and scales across the state of Oklahoma. His work included master planning for various Oklahoma communities, projects for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, higher education facilities at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, and civic infrastructure for the City of Oklahoma City.
